Was browsing my game bookcase for something different to play (bored) and came across Crysis, so thought I'd give it another go. I couldn't remember the last time I played the game but that question was answered when I opened the case and out fell a system settings reminder list I had put in it for Gen 3 system that's in computer heaven now. Seeing this I was anxious to see how the game would look and run with my home built W7 64 bit, I7-930 oc'd rig with dual GTX 260-216 OC GPU's. In a word, amazing. I can run the game on max settings (albiet with only 2x AA cranked in) at 1920x1600 at an average plus-50 fps. Dropping the settings to High it runs at a steady 60 FPS with vsync enabled with 4x AA.
I had read somewhere that Crysis was one of a small list of games that benefit from multi-core processors. Apparently so. Yeah, I know it's an old game, old news thing, but, man, what a difference in the game display detail. Really makes for a sensational game play experience.

2 years ago my answer would have been "so-so" because of the high system requirements that my old Gen 3 couldn't come close to handling. But with my current system, yup, but with a caveat. I didn't care for the later parts of the game initially nor do I anticipate I will this time even with the better system. Has to do with the story line and timed missions but will leave it at that so as not to spoil it for you not having played it before. From a purely graphics standpoint, again, with my current system, what a world of difference!

Spoke too soon. Toward the later parts of the game for whatever reason the frame rate just drops like a rock to slide show speed. I'd upgraded to the lastest 268 version driver but reverting to the 257.12 version didn't help a bit. Same pitiful slide show frame rate. Once it starts only rebooting and restarting the game gets it running again but it doesn't last long before it starts again. I know one of the patches was supposed to correct a memory leak issue but the patch is installed, so, so much for that theory. Oh, well. I did make it to the carrier endgame and the final boss fight is buggier than a summer night anyway so back on the shelf it goes...

Thanks for replying. I see you're running W7 64 bit as well so it has to be my system. I've been thinking about it since posting and it may be running SLI vs one card like you're running. I ran into nearly the same thing with Frontlines Fuel of War (both with XP and W7 64 bit) where the frame rate dropped dramatically in parts of the game and by trial and error found that disabling SLI solved the problem. But I've already uninstalled the Crysis and having already completed 98% of the game it isn't worth the hassle to reinstall and play through to the parts of the game where it showed up.

SLI and Crossfire are less buggy and more efficient, generally speaking, than they were a few years ago, but it's still the case that one powerful GPU provides a better experience than two lesser GPUs. (And a single card with dual GPUs is better than a comparable two-card setup.)
The lack of proper software accomodation is even more of a problem with more exotic setups like tri-fire and quad-SLI, which have always been like ignored step children from a driver standpoint. |
