Default Folding Client for Windows Home Server

Hello All,
Does anyone know of a client for the Windows Home Server?
I did a CPU upgrade to my HP 470 WHS and when I now run the Folding client my CPU get too hot and shuts down. Never had an issue before I upgrade.
Without running the folding program the CPU stays cool, I check the forum but did not see anything.

Thanks

It is likely an issue with the heatsink not being designed to cool past a certain temp range. Dell/HP usually use the cheapest/lowest noise cooler possible which doesn't really cool very well, if you change CPU and the temps are 10+C higher then that could be out if it's range of cooling and the CPU will throttle itself to avoid damage. What temps is it getting up to?

If you change the heatsink/fan you should be fine. Hopefully the motherboard has standard mount points.

Hi guys,
I think the issue maybe from the other forums is, we think the new AMD 1640 CPU might have been modified and heats up quite quickly. It seems that quite a few people noticed that the CPU heats up quickly compared to people who have this CPU for almost a year. Could be a bad batch or just something has changed. I am not sure what heat sink or fan I can replace it with. Will have to look into that.

Thanks

Chance,

I upgraded mine with a 1620 though I have a 1640 to put in it when I have time. The issue is the passive heatsink. Unless we can find an active cooler that will fit and insure a power connection (which I can't recall seeing) this might be tough to do.

Hi MichaelO,

Keep me posted if you hear anything. I will keep investigating it as well.

Chance,

The biggest issue after looking back at the CPU Upgrade article and remembering what the motherboard looks like, is the fact that there isn't a conventional heatsink mount on the board. If there were then the AMD supplied active heatsink might work. Unfortunately there is no way to mount it and these little cases were never meant to cool a cpu running at 100% load 24/7. Not much hope for the HP WHS - even the new ones.

But the stock cpu would take forever to do anything! The Sempron was really under powered even for a server.

I think I have some bigger issue now. My server the past 24 hours has been shutting down, even when I am not doing anything. I think I have to maybe reseed the CPU And maybe add some more Thermal Paste.

This Sucks

Have you checked your temps on the Hardware Settings Tab?

Temp are holding fine, hovering around 30C without any folding and around 42C when folding. This is dropping the CPU setting in the program to about 70%. But this system shut down even when not folding.

I think the CPU needs to be looked at again.

The HomeServerLand.com guys are working on an WHS add-in for folding@home called WHS Folding. I have been beta testing it for a couple of weeks and it is really cool.

Here are some screenshots of an older build. I do have a newer version which adds a few more bells and whistles just not sure if I get into trouble for posting unreleased software screenshots.

Here is the link folding@home on Windows Home Server

I have set mine to 35% on an Intel Atom D510 processor =)

That looks pretty cool. Is it easier to set up than the regular client?
